Heartlands: Sketches of Rural America

Yep, it was sort of like that.

After the bride and groom left the party, I rode around town with my friend Dave in his pickup. When I asked what kids did here on a Saturday night, he swung the truck into the empty town square and pointed to a neon sign above Carl`s AG, the grocery store. "I`ll show you," he said, as he gunned the engine and started circling the square. "Focus on the sign." After we circled and circled several times, he pulled over and asked. "Did you see it? Did you see the rabbit?" I shook my head. "Hmmmm. It used to be there. If you go fast enough you see this, like, little bunny hopping across the neon. The neon bunny."
